Tryout schedule: (subject to change)
February1, 2, 3 (Mon, Tues, Wed: player selection at end of practice on Wed)

  • 8th grade practices from 3:15-4:45 p.m. at Stevens
  • 7th grade practices from 4:45-6:15 p.m. at Stevens

After teams have been selected, students will fill out the “Pay to Play” forms to be eligible for games and future practices.  If this is the first sport, the fee ends up being $75, if second sport the fee is $25.  After participating in two sports, every sport after there is no fee.  This means an athlete at most pays $100 per year.  Scholarship forms are available and economics should play no role in a student’s ability to participate in sports.

Tryouts:  We will have to limit the number of girls that make the team.  We will have two varsity teams (7th and 8th) and our JV team will depend on the number that tryout.  It is an incredibly difficult decision for the coaches on who does not make the team.  Players develop at different times; players that don’t make the team can still develop into outstanding basketball players.  Coaches will take into account many variables in making this decision.  This includes a player’s ability, “coachability”, attitude, hustle, basketball fitness, grades, behavior in and out of classroom, and teamwork.

Practice:  Players are expected to make all practices.  Players must make 8 practices before the first game.  Missing a tryout day may or may not factor in making the team.  All absences from a practice should be excused in advance with a note, or when an athlete returns to practice with a note.  How players practice will determine playing time in actual games.  Playing time in games is not equal and will be determined by athleticism, game situation, skill level, work habits, and improvements shown in practice.

Varsity (7th and 8th): Practice schedule: practices held at Stevens weekdays from 3:15-4:45 p.m.

Junior Varsity: practices held at Roosevelt.  A bus will bring students to Roosevelt immediately after school.  Players are responsible for their own transportation home after practice. Practice schedule: weekdays from 3:30-5:00 p.m.

Stevens Athletics Attendance Policy:
1st time: Any unexcused absence will result in missing the next contest.
2nd time: The second unexcused absence will result in removal from the team.

Coaches: Christine Chang, Mark Schmidt, Rebecca Gundersen, Brian Gundersen
