Port Angeles, Wash. - The Port Angeles School District (PASD) has scheduled its annual HIV/AIDS Parent Information Meeting for Wednesday, November 18 from 6:30 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. in the Port Angeles High School Library, 304 East Park Avenue. Washington State law requires that HIV/AIDS education be taught in the public schools from grades five through twelve.

(HIV stands for human immunodeficiency virus; AIDS, Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome.)

All teacher and student instructional materials, including videos, will be available for inspection.

Clallam County Health & Human Services representatives - Dr. Chris Frank, Health Officer and David Doran, RN - will be available, and teachers and administrators from PASD schools will be in attendance.  Participation will enable parents/guardians to discuss the topic with their students both before and after the classroom presentations.

The District uses the KNOW: AIDS Prevention Curriculum developed by Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction staff. The curriculum was reviewed for medical accuracy by the Office of HIV/AIDS and the Department of Social and Health Services and meets the approval standard required by the AIDS Omnibus Bill of 1998. The AIDS curriculum is intended to provide basic information about AIDS.

Washington State law requires that parents/guardians attend this informational meeting in order to have their child excused from participation in the AIDS prevention program. Following the meeting, parents/guardians who wish to have their child excused from participation in the AIDS prevention program may sign a release form.

Questions may be directed to School District staff at 360.457.8575.
