Stevens Students Participate in Prevention ForumPort Angeles, Wash. – Stevens Middle School students, all members of the school’s Prevention of a Drug and Alcohol Society, attended the Spring Youth Forum May 17 at the Great Wolf Lodge, an event co-hosted by the Washington State Departments of Social and Health Services and Health. The event offered an opportunity for students to share their projects about alcohol. tobacco, and drug use reduction efforts in their communities.

“I am truly inspired by the youth who accepted the challenge to work with their local schools and communities to prevent substance abuse and encourage life-long healthy choices among their peers,” said Chris Imhoff, director of the DSHS Division of Behavioral Health and Recovery, in a media release. “I also want to encourage parents, grandparents, coaches and other adult mentors to stay involved with children and teens, let them know you are proud of them, model healthy choices, and support them when they’re having challenges. Your influence matters.”

“Teens know drinking can be dangerous, but the latest Washington Healthy Youth Survey shows that only one in three 10th graders think regular marijuana use is risky,” said Steve Smothers, Marijuana Prevention and Education manager at the Department of Health. “The Forum encourages youth to educate each other about making good choices, and supports Washington’s efforts to help the next generation be the healthiest ever.”

Thirty-seven teams, which accounted for approximately 200 participants, took part in the Spring Youth Forum.

The Prevention of a Drug and Alcohol Society team shared a PowerPoint about its structure and local partnerships. Its social norm campaign consists of bringing positive attention to the amount of students not taking drugs, drinking alcohol, or smoking tobacco.

Prevention of a Drug and Alcohol Society Motto is: Together we Stampede! Strong. Healthy. Substance Free.
